Wow! if you”ve been near the lake lately you can see how much work has happened. CalTrans is busy all along Highway 1. See below for changes on their planned work schedule.
Meanwhile, crews have been in and cut back some of the vegetation on the scenic overlook on the east side of the lake. They”re also preparing tree removal in the staging area away from the lake near the underpass on West Pacific. I also heard today that they”ve been out doing the archeological core samples which will allow scientists to study the history of the lake”s sediment.
The Trust and CalTrans are also preparing several informational sessions for us neighbors. Please try to attend one of the walks or the informational session. There is a lot of great information that is being conveyed about this process during these sessions. It”s also our time to weigh in on concerns or problems that we may be seeing as the project gears up.

Highway 1 Work by Caltrans – Extended Construction Hours
The highway stabilization work by Caltrans began in July and is expected to continue until November 2012. Operating hours have generally been Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. To phpaide.com complete the project before November, Caltrans is extending work hours beginning this week. Operating hours will be 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Saturday.
Tree Removals and Site Preparation Work for Remediation
The Presidio Trust is preparing work areas needed for the upcoming lake dredging project. Vegetation and benches have been removed from the east shore spur trail and overlook to clear an access route to the lake. In the staging area north of the lake, approximately 50 trees are being removed this week. Fencing has been erected to close the staging area and the east shore spur trail and overlook for the duration of the construction project. To ensure public safety during tree removal work, Mountain Lake trail around the lake will be closed for short periods early in the week of October 1st.
Public Information Walks
Join Presidio Trust staff for a walk and discussion about plans for the remediation and enhancement of Mountain Lake. Enhancement of the area surrounding Mountain Lake began in 2001 and is ongoing. In November 2012, the Presidio Trust will begin cleanup of the lake by dredging contaminated sediment. Additional enhancement activities in and around the lake will follow. Learn about upcoming improvements to one of the few remaining natural lakes in San Francisco from project managers and staff.
