On Tuesday March 4th, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution which (1) urges the Presidio Trust and Caltrans to remediate Mountain Lake's toxicity, (2) requests that the Presidio Trust test the soil at the lake's beachfront and (3) requests the Recreation and Park Department to post signage at the beach warning the public of the lake's condition.
The resolution was placed on the board's agenda by Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier after she was alerted by the Friends of Mountain Lake Park (FMLP) that Mountain Lake is a designated toxic cleanup site. The lake and Presidio are in the supervisor's district.Members of the Friends of Mountain Lake Park have tried for years to get the lake cleaned up. "When we found out that the Presidio Trust, the Army and Caltrans were getting set for a legal battle," said FMLP president Kate Scanlan, "we realized that a better approach would be a political solution. That is when we went to Supervisor Alioto-Pier. We are grateful for her leadership on this issue."
When you are in the park, introduce yourself to the new Section Supervisor for the Richmond District, Chuck McMackin. He supervises the five (soon to be six) gardeners in this section. He's been in the park business for many years and is confident he can get Mountian Lake Park back in shape with the gardeners and volunteer labor.
